Artist Bio

Amelia Beauregard is an interdisciplinary artist living and creating on Lək̓ ʷəŋən and W̱ SÁNEĆ territory in Victoria, BC at the University of Victoria. She primarily works with video, creating immersive installations with sculptural elements, but recently has been exploring materially with image transferring and object-making. Born in Calgary AB, she spent her childhood years exploring colours and music between the Rocky Mountains of Alberta and the grasslands of Saskatoon, SK. Since moving to Vancouver Island in 2012 and spending the remainder of childhood far from her roots, she has grown to indulge in themes of belonging, nostalgia and fracture in her work. In her second year of university, Amelia was awarded the John and Myrtle Tilly Undergraduate Scholarship for excellence. She has exhibited both digital and video installation work at the Audian Gallery, the Ministry of Causal Living, the Vault Gallery, and The Void in Victoria BC.

Artist Statement

Working primarily in the intersection of video, sculpture, and installation, my work is an honest and tender attempt to understand myself in relation to “home” and the body. I am focused on the dance between confession and restraint in my practice, and my formal training in painting and keen interest in cinema allow for a strong understanding of composition and storytelling. I often take video out of its two-dimensional boundaries and use curated spaces and sculptural elements to create an immersive environment to engage viewers. Inspired by my own musicianship, sound and melody are integral parts of my practice, using my voice and songwriting as a medium to explore the senses and draw viewers inward towards the soul of my work.
