Kate Jones is a visual artist who resides and works in Victoria BC, Canada. She is completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Victoria where she studies painting and drawing. Her work has recently been exhibited within the University of Victoria galleries, including participating in group exhibitions, Shaped by Dusk and Spillways. Kate works predominantly with acrylic paint on canvas, often combining acrylic with soft pastel. Her work is influenced by impressionist techniques such as plein air, and contemporary artists including Chantal Khoury. She incorporates loose brush strokes, gesture and a balanced sense of colour to create immersive imagined landscapes. Her work has a strong sense of narrative; grounded in observational drawing and manipulated to achieve an abstracted interpretation.
Within my practice, I explore themes of space and atmosphere. To be immersed into another universe by way of books or films is one of my greatest joys. Working primarily with acrylic paint and soft pastels, I am to invoke a similar sense of escapism through painting.These scenes are grounded in an earth like environment, but often have suggestions of fantasy through my use of character design or spatial manipulation.
