Artist Bio

Sarah Massey is an artist living, learning, and working on the unceded Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ territories. Her work has been exhibited at the Vault, the Audain Gallery, the Mezzanine, and the Ministry of Casual Living. In spring 2026, she will graduate with a BFA in Visual Arts with Honours from the University of Victoria.
Massey’s practice extricates fragments from the labyrinthine architecture of her own mental circuitry. Each piece hints at a larger metaphysical map, giving form to invisible structures: internalized protective devices, spellwork embedded in domestic ritual, and the poetics of intimacy. Raised in Hong Kong, a city alive with light and motion, she became comfortable holding competing frequencies at once. Visual grammar from her childhood surfaces in her work: colour that refuses to settle, motifs that feel inherited but can’t be sourced. Her experiences of apophenia and visual snow become creative substrates; phantom symbols, static vision interference, and synchronicities coalesce into a codified visual language. Through her work, Massey encodes her response. At the core of this feedback loop is reciprocity: the belief that anything perceived or experienced can be received as a love letter. By making art, she offers one back. Working across oil painting, sculpture, transfer printing, digital media, and video installation, her practice traces how experience embosses itself–each moment pressing into the next, accumulating patterns that become both wound and suture, both signal and static.
